Gaia Ashram is an education center dedicated to Deep Ecology, Permaculture, and Eco-Village Design, located on 2 hectares of land near the rural village of Ban Suai Long in northeastern Thailand, not far from Nong Khai.

The mission of Gaia Ashram is to offer a holistic space where individuals can experience and practice the interconnectedness of all living and non-living beings. Through mindful interaction with nature and each other, the Ashram fosters a deep sense of unity while engaging in hands-on activities that regenerate and heal the land.

Gaia Ashram serves three main functions:

  • Offering international courses in permaculture, deep ecology, eco-village design, and other holistic/spiritual education.
  • Acting as the base for Gaia School Asia and NextGEN Asia, which focus on nature-based education for children and youth across Asia.
  • Providing training for local farmers in organic and sustainable farming practices, helping to promote environmental stewardship within the local community.

This vibrant space is where learning and living merge, creating a practical environment for both personal growth and ecological regeneration.

Length of Stay:

2 weeks

Arrival Days:

We kindly ask volunteers to arrive on Monday morning, as we hold a Gaia Ashram tour in the afternoon for all new arrivals.

Type of work

At Gaia Ashram, we typically engage in three main types of activities: building, gardening, and nature regeneration. The work varies depending on the season, as Thailand has three distinct seasons. Below are the seasons and the activities associated with each:

Rainy Season July until October

Currently, we are planting numerous trees and water-loving vegetables. There may also be ongoing building projects that we will be involved in during your stay.

Cool season November until February.

This is the peak time for vegetable production and organic gardening. However, we are also focused on building projects during this season, as the dry weather is ideal for construction.

Dry/Hot Season March until June. Generally, this is a time for building, and it’s also a great opportunity for us to visit places that are cooler and more comfortable.

Food

As volunteers, you will take turns cooking breakfast and lunch together in shifts. In the evening, if there are more than five volunteers at Gaia Ashram, Om’s sister-in-law, Gig, will prepare dinner for us. We follow a vegetarian diet at Gaia Ashram, and there is always a vegan option available for those who prefer it.

Accommodation

The second floor of the sala serves as the dormitory, with space for approximately twenty people to sleep. We provide ample mosquito nets, mattresses, blankets, and cushions for your comfort. Gaia Ashram also welcomes travelers on bicycles or those with their own tents, offering designated areas to set up camp. However, we advise against camping during the rainy season. The same rate as the dormitory applies for tent stays. Please inform us in advance if you plan to stay in your tent.
