Karpathos > Diafani > Olympos > Vroukounta > Avlona > Tristomo > Palatia > Saria

Wild, untouched beauty in the Dodecanese, sculpted by winds, customs and centuries-old traditions

The second largest island of the Dodecanese has no equal. It holds on dearly to its past in its ancient acropolis, caves, churches and even its traditional dress. The setting is dramatic in all the best senses of the word: stunning vistas from untouched, cliff top and mountainside villages that defy gravity and a fearful hammering from the wind to keep vigilant watch over the Aegean.

In Karpathos you’ll discover an island with its Greek soul intact, living traditions, people of real character, musical skills passed down the generations and legendary festivals – untarnished by modern fads.

Manners and customs alive and unspoiled

On this island, it’s as if time has stood still. Here you will find an authentic Greece, like something out of a bygone era. Many women still wear the traditional dress, while men harvest their crops with scythes. Men and women sit separately at village festivals, where musicians play the bagpipes, lyre and lauto, crafted on the island, and sing in the style of their ancient ancestors.

In northern Karpathos you’ll find even older, sometimes strange customs still practiced faithfully. The festivals have to be lived to be believed.

Nature and history in the untrodden north

The north, above Olymbos and all the way to Saria, is a favourite haunt for birds, seals, frogs and salamanders as well as the home of large, tasty but elusive fish. There you’ll also find the palaces of Doric Nisyros, sacred ancient Vroukounda and exotic Tristomo. Walk to your heart’s content.

If there is a hiker-paradise in the Aegean, it must be on Karpathos. Centuries-old cobblestone paths lead to forgotten ancient sites, roadless villages without electricity or other mod cons and breath-taking views. The hiking trails crisscross the island but are best in the north.

A rare ecosystem

Karpathos, along with the islet of Saria, is one of the most important islands in Greece for the protection of rare species and ecosystems. Two sites are included in the Natura 2000 network for their bird and seal populations.

Karpathos Island > Diafani

Upon arrival to Karpathos airport, a transfer is arranged to the charming sea front village of Diafani. Settle to your room, and enjoy the calmness of the surroundings.

Overnight at Diafani

Olympos Village > Summit of Profitis Ilias

Olympos is a village of exceptional beauty, and the capital of northern Karpathos. You will cross traditional villages, beautiful green valleys and verdant cliffs until you reach the beautiful settlement on the slopes of a mountain.

Houses in Olympos are built amidst lush green forests and preserve their traditional colour and layout. The village itself is a live museum with an idyllic atmosphere. Today, the village has a population of 400 inhabitants most of whom are engaged in farming and agriculture.

Olympos retains an old fashioned way of life where primitive customs play an important role. Having reached Olympos you will climb to Profitis Ilias peak @718 meters, to admire the magnificent view of the Aegean sea and you will then descend to Olympos where you will have time to enjoy your lunch (if you wish to do so) and explore the village. (depending on your will, you can either hike down to Diafani via Ag.Konstantinos or transfer back to Diafani).

Overnight at Diafani

Papa Mina

A lovely walk up and down some gentle slopes, through pine trees and past olive groves and wheat fields to the pretty bay of Papa Mina with its pebble beach and shady Tamarisk trees. You will have time to enjoy swimming and snorkeling in this beautiful bay before you return back to Diafani.

Overnight at Diafani

Avlona > Vroukounta

You will make a short transfer to Avlona from where your hike on a stone path built in ancient times descends to Ancient Vroukounta.

Vroukounta is a mystical area where once stood the ancient city state of Vrykous. You will discover ruins of more than 3500 years old, the Church cave of St. John and underwater treasures while snorkeling.

Then you will hike up and back to the village of Avlona for a delicious homemade lunch (highly reccomended but optional) to the one and only tavern in the area – famous all over Karpathos. After, you will descend to Vananta by a stone path that goes easily towards this lovely bay.

From there, the last part of the hike is situated just on the coast offering incomparable views.

Overnight at Diafani

Avlona > Tristomo > Ag.Aikaterini

Again from Avlona, following a cobbled road you will reach Tristomo, an almost deserted village – where one last family refuses to abandon its hometown – and a natural harbor set in a protected bay on the north-west coast with spectacular views.

After, you can continue to Ag.Aikaterini and Steno – the spot where you can almost “touch” the nearby island of Saria. A traditional fishing boat will take you back to Diafani.

Overnight at Diafani

Palatia Beach

With a boat you will cross to Saria Island, where you will make a traverse hike of the island ending at the beach of Palatia where you will enjoy a barbeque lunch and take the boat back to Diafani. Saria was part of Karpathos until itdetached from it through erosion. In antiquity Saria used to be one of the four cities of Karpathos.

Everywhere there are ancient monuments, ruins and remains of ancient settlements, while Saria was the base of Saracen pirates. According to mythology, the island was created when Poseidon in a battle with Titan Ephialtes, he cut off a piece from Karpathos side and buried under this opponent.

Ruins of the city are sunken in the Strait of Tristomou, between Karpathos and Saria. Signs indicate the existence of Apollo Porthmiou sanctuary. There are traces of human presence since the Neolithic Age and the early Bronze Age, and since historical times have been found remains of fortifications on the west side of Castello hill. Furthermore, the island is an important habitat and breeding site for birds and marine organisms.

Note that the northern Karpathos, Saria, and the sea area around them, belongs to the European network of protected areas Natura 2000, thanks to the variety of habitats available and rare plant and animal species that host.

You are responsible for obtaining and paying for all visas and entry documents, for meeting all health and other
requirements, and for any documents required by the laws, regulations, orders, and/or requirements of the countries you will visit. Greece Adventure Trips is not responsible for providing you with specific visa and passport information or documentation, and Greece Adventure Trips cannot accept liability for any passenger refused entry onto any transport or into any country due to failure of the passenger to carry correct documentation. All passengers traveling
internationally are required to have a passport. Some countries require passports to be valid for at least six (6) months beyond the conclusion of your trip; some require that you have a minimum of three blank pages left in your passports.
It is your responsibility to verify all visa and passport requirements.

What you need to bring depends on the trip you have chosen and the countries or regions you are planning to visit during your entire vacation. We suggest that you pack as lightly as possible.

Most travellers carry a small to medium size backpack or rolling bag or suitcase.

You will also need a day pack or bag to carry water, cameras and other electronics like iPods and mobile phones.

Every traveller is different and therefore spending money requirements will vary. Some travellers may drink more than others, while other travellers like to purchase more souvenirs. Consider your likely spending habits when budgeting for drinks, shopping and tipping.

We have provided some specific recommendations below to assist you to plan your budget and manage your money while on holiday.

During your holiday, you will use the Sri Lankan Rupee as local currencies. Because currency exchange rates in South East Asia do fluctuate quite frequently, we ask that you refer to the following website for the most up to date information on exchange rates: www.xe.com

The best way to access local currency in Sri Lanka is from an Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) with a debit card. ATMs are readily available throughout South East Asia and will usually accept cards from both the Visa and MasterCard international networks. If possible, travel with both a Visa and a MasterCard to provide backup in case of loss or access problems with one card. Please note, your bank will usually charge a fee for overseas withdrawals.

Some Rupee is recommended for those occasions when ATMs are not accessible such as a number of islands and remote provinces. You should bring some cash with you for emergency situations (please refer to our trip dossier) but not a substantial amount as carrying only cash is high risk. The ideal mix is two or more ATM card/s with some cash as back-up.

Credit cards are accepted at some upmarket hotels and restaurants, and some larger stores if shopping for big items. They are of no use at smaller establishments.

Cash advances with your credit card are also possible at some banks. However, the process is time-consuming and tends to attract high fees.

Traveller’s cheques can be tricky, time-consuming and expensive to exchange. While we do not recommend that you bring them as your primary source of funds, you may choose to bring one or two cheques in case of emergency. Thomas Cook or American Express travellers’ cheques in US currency are the easiest to exchange.

Depending on the service, it is customary in Asia to tip service providers, such as waiters, approximately 10%. Though not compulsory, tipping is expected and shows an expression of satisfaction with the people who have assisted you on your holiday. Although it may not be customary to you, it is of considerable significance to the people who will take care of you during your travels. There are several times during the trip where there is an opportunity to tip the local guides or drivers we use. Recommendations for tipping drivers and local guides range from $1.5-$3.5 USD per person, per day, depending on the quality and length of the service. If unsure, ask your local Green Cultural Travel representative.

Please note inoculations may be required for the country visited. It is your responsibility to consult with your travel doctor for up to date medical travel information well before departure.

We recommend that you carry a small First Aid kit, hand sanitizers or antibacterial wipes, and any personal medical supplies you might require.

For your convenience, we have also partnered (premium partner) with OnVacationDoctor, a professional website that includes the contact details of all English-speaking doctors no matter where in the world you are traveling. We help you by providing English-speaking doctors to call or to schedule an immediate appointment with should you ever have to. We provide peace of mind by connecting you directly with someone who can help!

As a minimum, an average level of fitness and mobility is required to undertake our easiest programs. Travellers must be able to walk without the aid of another person, climb 3-4 flights of stairs, step on and off small boats, and carry their personal luggage. Travellers with a pre-existing medical condition are required to complete a short medical questionnaire, which must be signed by their physician. These requirements ensure that travellers have the necessary fitness and mobility to complete their chosen trip comfortably. While our

Representatives work hard to ensure all our traveller’s needs are catered for, it is not their responsibility to help individuals who cannot complete the day’s activities unaided. Please refer to the physical ratings in this Trip Details document for more information.

When exploring on your own carry only the necessary minimum with you and use a well-hidden money belt for cash and credit cards. The majority of your valuables, including your passport, should be left in the hotel safe. You can organise use of the safe at the reception of your accommodation. There is no need to get paranoid, just be cautious.

Due to the physical nature of a walking vacation, Greece Adventure Trips requires all participants to have overseas emergency medical insurance coverage while on our trips. Please see our Travel Insurance web page (https: //www.greeceadventuretrips.com/gat-travel_insurance.html) for details. In the event you find it necessary to cancel prior to or during a trip due to injury, personal or family illness or emergencies, or other covered reasons; travel insurance generally reimburses non-refundable costs including the tour and airfare. Additional coverage may include trip interruption, missed connections, lost or delayed baggage, emergency medical transportation, necessary medical care if sick or injured, and emergency evacuation. Whichever company you choose, be sure to confirm the specifics directly with the company. Greece Adventure Trips does not assume any responsibility for the information about the insurance companies or their policies. Please be advised that some types of coverage may require purchase within 24 hours of your initial trip deposit. Although trip “cancellation” insurance is not required, it is strongly recommended.Green Cultural Travel – Community Programs

Greece’s main carriers are Olympic Air and Aegean Airlines. Other airlines operating flights from the UK include British Airways, easyJet and Ryanair. The cost of flights to Greece peaks in July and August when most Europeans take their holidays. Throughout the rest of the year prices vary according to demand.Greece’s motorway network has been significantly upgraded over the past decade or so. Motorways and some bridges incur a toll. In rural areas, and especially on the islands, many roads are narrow, twisty and poorly surfaced. Most major international car hire firms operate throughout Greece, with offices at airports, ferry ports and in all major cities. The legal age for hiring a car is 21. All Greece’s main cities and many small destinations too are connected by an extensive network of long-distance buses, which almost always prove more efficient than the train. Major routes include Athens-Thessaloniki and Athens-Patras.

Greek food tends to be very simple, rarely involving sauces but with full use of local seasonal produce, olive oil and charcoal grills – just as people have been eating in outlying villages for many centuries. However, Athens and some of the more fashionable islands such as Santorini and Mykonos have seen the arrival of fusion cuisine and so-called modern taverna fare (involving lighter dishes with more subtle flavours and artistic presentation).Tap water is drinkable in Athens and other cities – in fact, in areas where the local water is good, bars and restaurants are obliged by law to provide customers with glasses or jugs of tap water free of charge upon request. However, visitors should be wary of drinking tap water in remote areas, and on many islands – even if the locals do it. Bottled water is widely available and prices are strictly controlled on the mainland and islands. Milk is pasteurised and dairy products are safe for consumption. Local meat, poultry, seafood, fruit, and vegetables are considered safe to eat.Tipping waiters in bars and restaurants is the usual, 12% to 15% is the norm.

Wi-Fi is widely available in Greece and in most establishments, it is free to customers. Internet cafes in the cities and on the main islands of Crete, Kos, Mykonos, and Rhodes, also offer Internet access.

In Greece the power sockets are of type C and F. Type C: also known as the standard ‘Euro’ plug. This socket also works with plug E and plug F. Type F: also known as “Schuko”. This socket also works with plug C and plug E. If your appliance’s plug doesn’t match the shape of these sockets, you will need a travel plug adapter in order to plug inThe standard voltage is 230 V and the standard frequency is 50 Hz. If your appliance isn’t compatible with 220-240 volts, a voltage converter will be necessary.
